Wie accepts PGA Tour event invite

Michelle Wie

Michelle Wie will try her hand again in a PGA Tour event when she plays in the Reno-Tahoe Open, starting on 31 July.

Wie has played in seven men's events since her much-hyped professional debut but has yet to make the cut.

The 18-year-old was disqualified for not signing her third-round scorecard while lying in second place at last weekend's LPGA Tour State Farm Classic.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for me," said the Hawaiian of her latest tilt at taking on the men.

"It's not every day that a woman is given the chance to play on the greatest tour in the world."

Held the same week as the World Golf Championship Invitational in Akron, the Reno-Tahoe Open will have a relatively weak field.

Tournament director Michael Stearns said: "Michelle is getting her game together, she's getting back in the swing of things, and we have no problem extending her this opportunity."

Wie, who had a stand-out amateur career, has yet to claim her first LPGA Tour title and has struggled with poor form and injuries in the past year.

Her mistake at the State Farm Classic was a costly one as a high finish would have given her enough money to guarantee a LPGA Tour spot next year.

Wie has one sponsor's exemption left on the tour, which she is expected to use at the Canadian Women's Open in August.

She will need to finish within the top three in order to gain her Tour card without having to go through qualifying.
