England's David Howell shot a superb final round 67 to finish 12 over at the Open at Royal Birkdale.
Howell eagled the 17th to add to his four birdies but a poor putt at 18 led to his third bogey of the round.
"I played really nicely, my best round in the Open, but to three putt the last was disappointing," he said.
Paul Casey also finished on 12 over after a final round of 70 that included an eagle at the 15th and a birdie at the 17th as well as three bogeys.
Earlier, Justin Rose finished 21 over par and Lee Westwood one shot better after both shot three over par 73s in their final rounds.
"It's really disappointing," said Rose of his tournament, after a final round of six bogeys and three birdies.
Rose started the weekend in contention at six over but his hopes were wrecked after Saturday's round of 82.
He teed off at 0720 BST on Sunday wearing all black, before most of the leading contenders had arrived at the course.

The Englishman rose to prominence at Royal Birkdale 10 years ago when he finished fourth while playing as an amateur but ended this week far from happy.
"I had a magical week last time, but it's not a magical place for me and it's been disappointing," said Rose.
"I didn't feel a sense of burden and I felt in good shape mentally, but with the conditions it was easy for the week to get away from you and on Saturday that's what happened.
"I would have probably liked it to have been a test but not quite as blowing as this."
Rose finished his round in front of empty galleries - and sarcastically compared it to his final hole when he finished fourth.
"The walk coming down 18 was remarkably similar today," added Rose. "The grandstands were packed, buzzing."
Westwood carded a 78 on Saturday and followed that with three bogeys, two birdies and one double bogey in his 73.
"It will be a relief to get away from here," said the Worksop golfer.

"I can't remember four more taxing days. It has been pretty brutal out there.
"It wasn't great first thing Thursday morning, it was freezing and you don't expect that in July. It has not really eased up all week.
"But I've been beaten up by the putter. I can handle the weather and I have played pretty well tee to green, but it is just demoralising when you don't turn your good shots into birdies.
"I three-putted the first three holes the first day and that set the tone."
