World number one Lorena Ochoa shot her second one-under-par 71 in a row to take a one shot lead after the Kraft Nabisco Championship third round.
South Korea's Hee-Won Han is in second place while Annika Sorenstam is four shots off the pace.
England's Karen Stupples is six shots back after a second consecutive 74.
"In the first two rounds I gave myself chances, making a few putts, but today it was difficult. It was hard from the tee to the green," said Mexico's Ochoa.
"I am pretty happy with my round and with finishing under par. The most important thing is that I am in the lead and ready to play in the last round."
The trio of American Cristie Kerr, Sweden's Maria Hjorth and South Korea's Seon Hwa Lee are tied for third, two shots behind Ochoa.
Defending champion Morgan Pressel shot a 75 and was tied for 31st at four over at the Mission Hills Country Club in California.
