Woods confirms his return to tour

Tiger Woods and family World number one Tiger Woods has announced his plans to return to action after the birth of his first child.

The 31-year-old will host and feature in the inaugural PGA National event scheduled for 5-8 July.

Woods's schedule was expected to be affected by the arrival of Sam Alexis on 18 June, but he now looks certain to take part in the Open in three weeks.

He said: "I am very excited to announce my commitment to the National. As host, this tournament is very special to me."

The invitational event at Congressional Country Club, site of the 1997 US Open, has a field of 120 players.

The Tiger Woods Foundation took over the running of the competition in March and is set to serve as an annual key warm-up to the Open.

Woods added: "It is extremely special to be hosting an event here over the July 4th week and I'm looking forward to a great tournament that raises funds and awareness for the millions of kids my Foundation serves."

Woods' wife Elin gave birth to the couple's first child, the day after the conclusion of the US Open in Oakmont.

  • World number two Phil Mickelson will also play in the tournament after his injured wrist healed faster than expected.

Mickelson will be joined by Jim Furyk and Adam Scott, the two players immediately behind him in the world rankings, as well as Vijay Singh.

"It's always a great challenge to play in events against Tiger," said Mickelson.
