Clarke to make comeback in Madrid

Darren Clarke Darren Clarke will make his first competitive appearance since the death of his wife Heather at the Madrid Masters in a fortnight.

The tournament comes just a week before the Ryder Cup at the K Club.

The Ulsterman has made himself available for selection as a wild card in the European team and is expected to be one of Ian Woosnam's picks.

Clarke, who has not played since the Open in July, will need the competitive warm-up ahead of the clash with the US.

"He feels if he is picked, he needs a competitive week (beforehand)," Clarke's spokesman said.

Clarke's stablemate Lee Westwood is expected to be the other captain's pick.

The Dungannon player has been caring for his two children since his wife died on 13 August after a long battle against breast cancer.

European skipper Woosnam will announce his two wildcards on Sunday evening.

Clarke has been on the winning side three times in his previous four cup appearances.

Woosnam, asked on Wednesday if Clarke would be considered, replied: "All I've heard is that Darren is available to play in the Ryder Cup. It is a possibility. He is a possible, yes."

England's Paul Casey, who sealed his place by finishing fourth in the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational on Sunday, would love to see Clarke line up alongside him in Ireland.

"Woosie is the only guy who can tell you who he's going to pick," said Casey.

"All I know is when Darren Clarke is on his game, he is one of the finest in the world - an unbelievable golfer."
