Lee Westwood birdied two of the last three holes at the USPGA to boost his hopes of a Ryder Cup place next month.
The 33-year-old Englishman came into the final round at Medinah in a tie for 25th on four under but bogeys at the 1st and 4th saw him going backwards.
He then picked up three shots in seven holes only to drop four in two.
But he recovered well to finish on three under and a tie for 29th and may now have done enough to earn a wildcard pick from European captain Ian Woosnam.
Justin Rose, however, will be deeply disappointed with his fourth-round effort.
The 26-year-old Englishman, who was playing in his first major for two years, had high hopes of strong finish after a two-under 70 on Saturday.
But Rose, who has played on the US Tour for the last two seasons, finished with three bogeys for a five-over 75 that returned him to level par and a middle-of-the-pack finish.
And Graeme McDowell is another talented British player who will be a little annoyed not to have finished higher up the leaderboard.
The 27-year-old Ulsterman carded his second 72 of the weekend to remain on one under - a shot better than Rose and two behind Westwood.
