Colin Montgomerie After a promising start, the British challenge at the 105th US Open went the same way as most of the other 104.

Lee Westwood remained the best-placed Brit, but only just - his final round of 79 dropped him to 12 over, only one better than Colin Montgomerie.

The Scot carded a 74 and said: "That's about par. I didn't hit my irons quite good enough this week.

"I used to hit the ball straight better than anybody else, but my confidence is not quite the same."

Luke Donald, who began the tournament promisingly with a 69, slumped to a 10-over 80 on the final day, which included a triple-bogey seven on the 18th, for 16 over.

Westwood double-bogeyed the second and had five straight bogeys from the fifth.

Montgomerie's round was steadier but it included a triple-bogey six at the short ninth.

Nick Dougherty and Jonathan Lomas posted five-over 75s to finish on 15 and 16 over respectively, but the Englishmen should be reasonably satisfied with their US Open debuts.

Ian Poulter's eventful campaign ended with a 76, while Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell will be very disappointed to have finished with an 81 and a 21-over-par total.

European golfers have a dire record at the US Open, Tony Jacklin's victory in 1970 being their only success since 1927.
