Els, Mickelson finish in the pack
Ernie Els and Phil Mickelson, ranked third and fourth in the world, ended their US Open campaigns well down the field after trying weeks at Pinehurst.
Els, a two-time winner of the event, saved some face with a fourth-round 70, his best return of the tournament.
That was good enough to leave the 35-year-old South African on nine over par for 72 holes.
Phil Mickelson, who opened with a 69 on Thursday, completed a dismal weekend with a 74 that dropped him to 12 over.
