Els storms clear

Saturday's round-up

Johnnie Walker Classic

Ernie Els shot an eight-under-par 64 at Lake Karrinyup on Saturday to extend his lead to nine strokes in the Johnnie Walker Classic.

Els, who already has three title wins this year, started the day four shots ahead, and moved to 23 under for the tournament.

Jean-Francois Remesy of France is tied for second at 14 under after a 65 on Saturday with Craig Kamps of South Africa, who shot 64.

Defending champion Retief Goosen of South Africa is among a group of four tied for fourth at 13 under.

Goosen had a on 66 Saturday and is tied with David Smail of New Zealand (64) and Australians Andre Stolz (67) and Stephen Leaney (68).

Els has captured four of the last five tournaments he's played, and won the Classic in 1997.

Despite his fine effort, it was Craig Spence who produced the round of the day, equalling the European Tour record for eight consecutive birdies as he shot 63.

The Australian 28-year-old, with one career victory, began the day 12 shots off the lead on three under par but birdied every hole between the fourth and 11th.

Spence then had an eight-foot putt to break the record first set in 1985 by Seve Ballesteros and Ian Woosnam.

But his pin-high putt slid wide and finished a foot past the hole.

But despite that incredible display, Spence remained well behind Els.
