1933: Walter Hammond made 336 not out against New Zealand at Auckland to beat Don Bradman's world Test match record of 334, set three years earlier.
Hammond, then 29, played for Gloucestershire and was the finest English batsman of his generation.
He topped the first class averages for eight seasons in a row, 1933-9 and 1946, and scored his 100th first class century at the age of only 31.
He died in 1965.

1995: Wendy Toms was added to the list of Football League officials to become the first female official in the history of the Football League.
