Jersey name team for Youth Games

Daniel Halksworth wins gold in 2004

Jersey have named a 12-strong team of athletes in three sports for October's Commonwealth Youth Games in India.

Four athletes have been selected in each of the tennis, athletics and swimming teams for the games in Pune.

Jeux des Isles gold medallist Gemma Dawkins, 17, is part of the athletic team along with Stephen de la Haye, Zane Duquemin and Jenna Murphy.

Tom Gallichan, 15, who also took gold in Guadeloupe, is part of the island's swimming team.

He is joined by Emma Glendenning, who broke the island's 100m and 200m records at the national championships last week, as well as JJ Gallichan and Charlotte Manning.

Katie Gouyette, Scott Clayton, Charlie Cohen and Kirsten McArthur make up the tennis team.

"The 12 chosen are very worthy of going and we hope we'll perform very well," said secretary of the Jersey Commonwealth Games Association Alan Cross.

"It's a tremendous opportunity for these youngsters to go out onto a world stage. You are going to get some of the best people around the world at their age competing.

"Hopefully we'll see these names coming forward when we're looking to select the adult team for the Delhi 2010 Games, this will be a stepping stone for that."

Jersey's general team manager will be Paul Huddlestone, who held a similar role at the main Commonwealth Games in Melbourne two years ago.

The games run between 12-18 October and will see over 1,200 athletes from all 71 Commonwealth territories take part.

Jersey won its first ever Commonwealth Youth Games gold four years ago in Bendigo when swimmer Daniel Halksworth struck gold in the 400m individual medley.
