From the sixth minute of the opener, when Philipp Lahm's right-foot cracker flew into the top corner of Costa Rica's net, brilliant strikes have continued to astound spectators and pundits alike.
Spread betting on the total goals in this year's 64 World Cup matches remains between 160 and 162, but the quality of the goals this time around is adding extra impetus to a wonderful festival of football.

Lahm got the 2006 World Cup off to a blistering start with a stunning sixth-minute strike against the Costa Ricans. He cut across from the left flank and drove the ball into the top right-hand corner.
Torsten Frings, Germany v Costa Rica - Friday 9 June
Frings guaranteed Germany got off to a winning start with the final goal of their 4-2 win. He outdid Lahm's effort as he belted an unstoppable effort from distance in the 86th minute.
Paolo Wanchope, Germany v Costa Rica - Friday 9 June
The former Manchester City striker gave the hosts a headache all afternoon and deserved his double strike. The first was brilliant, running on to a through ball and coolly slotting home.
Javier Saviola, Argentina v Ivory Coast - Saturday 10 June
Villarreal playmaker Juan Riquelme picked out Saviola's superb diagonal run just before half-time and the Sevilla striker coolly flicked the ball under Ivory Coast goalkeeper Jean-Jacques Tizie.
Arjen Robben, Holland v Serbia & Mont'egro - Sunday 11 June
Chelsea striker Arjen Robben scored the only goal of their opening World Cup tie after 18 minutes, sliding the ball under Dragoslav Jevric following a neatly taken flick-on from Robin van Persie.
Tim Cahill, Australia v Japan - Monday 12 June (goal two)
The Everton midfielder only came on as a second-half sub and levelled matters with six minutes left. But in the last minute, he won it with a 20-yard right-foot beauty that crashed in off the post.
Tomas Rosicky, Czech Rep v USA - Monday 12 June (goal one)
With the Czech Republic already leading through a Jan Koller goal, Rosicky decided to outdo his countryman when he took aim from some 30 yards and rifled a right-footed shot past Kasey Keller.
Mohamed Kader, Togo v South Korea - Tuesday 13 June
In the first moment of real quality from either side, Kader sprinted forward, controlled the ball with his thigh and shot low into the bottom corner from the edge of the box for a surprise lead.
Lee Chun-Soo, South Korea v Togo - Tuesday 13 June
After a woeful first half which saw them trail, the Koreans stepped up a gear after the break and Chun-Soo curled home a delicious free-kick to get them on level terms.
Ahn Jung-Hwan, South Korea v Togo - Tuesday 13 June
South Korea steadily pushed forward after their equaliser and sealed the win when substitute Ahn Jung-Hwan turned on the edge of the box to fire a deflected shot high into the roof of the net.
Kaka, Brazil v Croatia - Tuesday 13 June
Kaka produced the one moment of real sublime Brazilian skill in the match just before half-time. AC Milan's star unleashed a wonderful left-footed shot to beat Stipe Pletikosa.

Arsenal's latest signing decided one classic goal was not enough and did it again on 76 minutes. He surged on to a majestic pass from Pavel Nedved and chipped the ball over Keller into the net.
Andrea Pirlo, Italy v Ghana - Monday 12 June
The AC Milan midfielder, who pulls the strings for Italy with his clever movement and perceptive passing, scored from 20 yards after being picked out by Francesco Totti from a left-sided corner.
Fernando Torres, Spain v Ukraine - Wednesday 14 June
By this time Spain were enjoying a mid-afternoon cruise, but Torres still wanted his name on the scoresheet. A brilliant run from Carles Puyol opened it up and Torres rifled in a fourth from 16 yards.
Steven Gerrard, England v Trinidad & Tobago - Thur 15 June
England did not exactly light up the tournament against unfancied Trinidad and Tobago, but they finished the match in style with Gerrard's perfectly-hit strike in the dying minutes.
Esteban Cambiasso, Argentina v Serbia & M'negro - Fri 16 June
Argentina produced an extraordinary move for a goal which will certainly be in the running for the best of the tournament - 24 unbroken passes were made before Cambiasso hammered the ball home.
Robin van Persie, Holland v Ivory Coast - Fri 16 June
Arsenal's Van Persie put in a fine all-round performance against the African side and his display looked all the more impressive thanks to a superbly-struck free-kick early on.
Bakary Kone, Ivory Coast v Holland - Fri 16 June
The tournament ended in disappointment for Ivory Coast as defeat to holland confirmed their exit - but not before Bakary Kone lit up the Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion with a brilliant solo effort.
