Fifa may expand women's World Cup

Franz Beckenbauer backs Germany's bid Fifa is considering expanding the size of the women's World Cup finals in 2011 from 16 to 24 teams.

The world governing body has delayed choosing from the six candidate countries to investigate the prospect.

President Sepp Blatter said: "We want to play the World Cup in China first and see what the level of 16 teams is.

"It may be that we can add eight teams and because there is such huge interest we want to make better investigation and contact with the bidders."

The six countries bidding to host the 2011 tournament - Canada, France, Germany, Switzerland, Australia and Peru - are likely to be whittled down before the final vote in November.

Blatter said: "They are all serious contenders but it is likely we will have a pre-selection before the vote."
