Arsenal thrash Fulham to stay top

By Tony Leighton

Karen Carney A 9-0 midweek trouncing of Fulham kept Arsenal top and the Cottagers rock bottom of the Women's Premier League.

Second-bottom Sunderland's 2-0 win against third-placed Doncaster Rovers Belles meant Fulham are now the only club yet to collect their first point.

Charlton Athletic won at Chelsea to stay level on points with Arsenal.

Leeds United and Bristol Academy both climbed three places, Leeds to fourth by beating Birmingham 4-2 and Bristol to seventh with a win at Cardiff City.

Fulham 0-9 Arsenal

Gemma Davison, Jayne Ludlow and Karen Carney all hit doubles as Arsenal stretched their goal difference to 32-0 with another big win.

The scoring was completed with a goal apiece by Katie Chapman, Lianne Sanderson and Rachel Yankey.

Chelsea 1-2 Charlton Athletic

England striker Eni Aluko raced through the Chelsea defence to open the scoring just before half-time with her eighth goal in four matches.

Aluko's strike partner Natasha Dowie doubled the Addicks' lead from a narrow angle on the hour.

Nina Downham pulled a goal back with a low shot 20 minutes from time, but despite a valiant effort Chelsea were unable to force a late equaliser.

Sunderland 2-0 Doncaster Rovers Belles

First-half goals by Steph O'Brien and Sophie Williams gave Sunderland a surprise victory.

The Black Cats' first points of the season came at the expense of a Donny side that had gone into the game with a 100 per cent record.

Leeds United 4-2 Birmingham City

Leeds raced into a four-goal lead in 40 minutes with Sue Smith, Karen Burke, Rachel McArthur and Lucy Ward on target.

Amy McCann reduced the arrears three minutes before the break, but though Birmingham had more of the play in the second half their only reward was a 67th minute own goal by Jess Wright.

Cardiff City 0-3 Bristol Academy

Kerry Bartlett, a close season signing from Forest Green Rovers, hit her first Premier League goals to spearhead a second win of the season for Academy.

Bartlett's two goals, one in each half, sandwiched a Justine Lorton strike just before the hour.
