Scotland completes Wigan transfer

Jason Scotland

Wigan have completed the signing of Jason Scotland from Swansea for £2m.

The transfer had been agreed last week but the striker has now received the necessary international clearance.

The 30-year-old, who has been given a two-year deal, told Wigan's website: "It's great to get to play in the Premier League. It's a big step up.

"Hopefully I can take it in my stride and do well. Just thinking about lining up against some of the best players in the world makes me smile."

Scotland will be reunited with former Swansea manager Roberto Martinez at the JJB Stadium, the Spaniard having taking the vacant Wigan post following Steve Bruce's departure to Sunderland.

During two successful seasons at Swansea, Scotland scored 53 goals from 91 starts and was part of Martinez's squad that secured promotion to the Championship in 2008. Burnley had an estimated £1.25m bid rejected for Scotland but Wigan were always favourites to sign the Trinidad and Tobago international once Martinez expressed an interest.

"Me and the gaffer were together at Swansea City for two seasons and it's exciting to be able to team up again here," added Scotland.

" I reckon this fella could be your equivalent to Stoke's James Beattie ... "

"He likes his team to get the ball down, move it around and keep possession. He wants his players to be in complete control of the game and because of this tactical approach to the game Swansea were able to do so well last season.

"I'm sure he's going to try and introduce that kind of attractive style of play here and I can't wait to be a part of it."

Scotland was rated at £3m by the Swans but they had to accept less as the striker has only 12 months left on his Liberty Stadium contract.

The £2m represents a substantial profit for the Championship side, who paid £25,000 to St Johnstone for him in the summer of 2007.

"Obviously we are disappointed to lose Scotland," Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins told his club website when the fee was agreed.

"I can assure our fans that all the funds received from the sale of Jason will be reinvested into the club. We will endeavour to do that before the season starts."

Scotland is Martinez's third signing as Wigan boss - midfielders Jordi Gomez and Hendry Thomas arriving earlier in the summer - while Martinez has also agreed a £2m fee with Hamilton for another midfielder, 19-year-old James McCarthy.
