Palacios pens new Wigan contract

Wilson Palacios

Wigan central midfielder Wilson Palacios has signed a new three-year contract with the club.

Palacios, 24, was linked with a move away from the club during the summer but has now committed himself to the JJB Stadium outfit.

The Honduran was key in helping Wigan stay in the Premier League last season and said: "Why would I want to leave?

"I've enjoyed every minute since linking up with manager Steve Bruce again and I love the Wigan fans."

Palacios and winger Antonio Valencia showed promising signs of being influential figures for Wigan towards the end of the past campaign and Bruce has now challenged the pair to continue their form this season.

How good is Palacios?

"This is the big year," said the Wigan boss. "I think most of the big clubs have looked at the two of them and thought 'these are good players'.

"But it is repeating it. They have set the standard now. The great players can do it year in and year out, which is why they are top players.

"A lot of clubs will be looking and thinking they had a good season with Wigan so we'll keep monitoring them and see if they can do it next year again - then I might have a problem.

"Unfortunately, that is the beast. It is a double-edged sword but it is one you have to live with."
