Loach injury leaves Hornets short

Scott Loach

Watford are considering whether to sign a keeper on loan ahead of Tuesday night's trip to Burnley, following Saturday's injury to Scott Loach.

The Hornets have just one senior goalkeeper in Richard Lee after Mart Poom was injured in the previous week.

Manager Aidy Boothroyd told BBC Three Counties Radio: "It is something we will have to think about.

"Thankfully Scott is OK, but he went to hospital to be checked over, and there was a danger of internal bleeding."

Loach was injured after just 11 minutes of Saturday's defeat at Sheffield United, as he made a save to deny former-Hornet Danny Webber.

Boothroyd revealed there were real concerns for the keeper's health.

"He's pulled all the abdominal muscles that connect to his hip. It all started to bleed internally and that's why he had to come off."

Loach was making his full-league debut, following Mart Poom's shoulder injury the week before against Reading.

Lee replaced him at Bramall Lane, having himself recovered from a pre-season injury, but the question remains whether the Hornets can afford another loan addition to the squad.

The signing of Sam Sodje was funded by their progress in the Carling Cup.

Cover for Lee could be provided by one of the youth team keepers, or by calling up goalkeeping coach Alec Chamberlain.
