Watford manager is charged by FA

Watford boss Aidy Boothroyd

Watford boss Aidy Boothroyd has been hit by a Football Association charge of aiming abusive and/or insulting words towards referee Stuart Attwell.

Boothroyd was sent to the stands by Attwell during Watford's controversial 2-2 draw against the Royals at Vicarage Road on Saturday.

The Hornets manager has until 10 October to respond to the charge.

Attwell farcically awarded Reading a goal rather than a corner after the ball went out of play.

The Football League has since ruled out replaying the game.

The League's chief operating officer Andy Williamson explained: "The laws of the game give no discretion in these matters.

"The referee's decision regarding whether a goal is scored or not is final and binding. Given this explicit position, the League cannot intervene."
