Watford boss searches for striker

Aidy Boothroyd

Watford manager Aidy Boothroyd is hoping to sign a new striker after having some funds freed up by the sale of Danny Shittu to Bolton Wanderers.

But despite wanting to sign defender Ulises de la Cruz, Boothroyd says he can only afford one player at present.

He told BBC Three Counties Radio: "I'm looking to buy a centre-forward. Danny's departure has freed up some money for one player.

"My job will simply be to keep my head down and get these players working."

Boothroyd was speaking after Saturday's goalless draw at Crystal Palace, when Hungarian international Tamas Priskin played as a lone striker.

"We are a new side now and I want to make sure I build on that"

The Hornets have lost several forwards over the summer - Darius Henderson, Nathan Ellington, Steve Kabba and Moses Ashikodi - as they bid to trim the wage bill at Vicarage Road.

And Boothroyd added to BBC London 94.9: "I think that Tamas does need someone up there, it's a long old season for a 22-year-old and particularly in the role he's playing.

"I would like to bring somebody else in to give him a hand or give the squad a hand, for me I think it's more of a priority but given a little bit of time that might free up some more."

Meanwhile the Watford boss is now pondering his selection for Tuesday night's Carling Cup tie at home to Bristol Rovers.

In the past, he has used the competition to blood younger players. But, with his squad greatly reduced, he may now stick with the majority of the side on duty at Palace.

"We are a new side now and I want to make sure I build on that.

"At the same time we have some very good young players so I will have to give that some thought."
