No new number two for Boothroyd

Adrian Boothroyd

Watford manager Aidy Boothroyd says he will not be appointing a new assistant manager over the summer months.

The Hornets faded badly to miss out on promotion - and many fans highlighted that their slump coincided with Keith Burkinshaw's departure as number two.

"Keith Burkinshaw was terrific for me," said Boothroyd. "But, as time went on, his role became less. I was the one making the decisions - good and bad.

"The bottom line is I'm the manager. I'll live and die on my own two feet."

Boothroyd told Three Counties Radio: "My opinion is that I can get someone in to hold my hand and to cry on their shoulder.

"But I've thought a great deal about this and taken advice from the person I consider to be the best in the world."

Watford led the Championship for much of the first half of the season prior to Burkinshaw's departure from Vicarage Road being announced on 17 December.

Boothroyd's men then won just five of their last 23 games from Christmas onwards over the second half of the league campaign. And, having almost missed out on the play-offs completely, they were hammered 6-1 on aggregate by Hull City in the semis.
