Barnes expecting a smaller squad

Tranmere Rovers manager John Barnes expects to start next season with a smaller squad than the one he inherited on his arrival at the club in June.

Rovers have lost Antony Kay, Steve Jennings, Ben Chorley and Chris Greenacre since the end of last season.

"We know the financial constraints and I don't think we'll bring in as many players as we let go," Barnes told BBC Radio Merseyside.

"That's a fact of modern football for a club like Tranmere."

Barnes believe he may have to supplement his dwindling squad by moving into the loan market.

"I'm under no illusion that because we got rid of three of the top players, therefore we have that money to spend, that's not the situation, that's not the reality," said Barnes.

"I understand that and am pleased to work under those circumstances.

"What we are trying to do is exercise the loan option because that won't cost us much money and depending on which club it is and which players they are maybe financially we could be helped out."

Barnes has been boosted this week by striker Ian Moore's decision to sign a new two-year contract to remain at Prenton Park.

"It's good that we can retain a player of Ian's quality but also his experience"

Barnes believes the veteran striker could have a big part to play in the forthcoming League One season.

"He has a good attitude, he's experienced which is what we need because we've lost a lot of players and we have a lot of young players," added Barnes.

"It's good that we can retain a player of Ian's quality but also his experience."
