Spurs boss Ramos needs time - Jol

Martin Jol

Former Tottenham manager Martin Jol says under-fire Spurs boss Juande Ramos must be given time to turn things around at White Hart Lane.

Jol was sacked last season after making a poor start, but feels bottom-placed Spurs should not make the same mistake.

"They've changed the team but have done it with good intentions as they want to be better," Jol told Five Live Sport.

"They need to get good results, but it will take time, and unfortunately in England you don't get time."

Spurs travel to Stoke on Sunday having picked up only two points this season.

Ramos has also spent big on Luka Modric, David Bentley, Roman Pavlyuchenko and Vedran Corluka while losing the services of strike duo Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov.

So far the new faces at Tottenham have failed to prove their worth.

Jol is pained by Spurs' poor start the season, with the Dutchman still fond of his former club.

"I left a year ago and I was unhappy to leave," he said.

"I wish them all the best as they are a big club with over a million supporters and they were great to me.

"I pity the fans because they are the best in England."

Jol has reignited his career at German outfit Hamburg, who currently lead the Bundesliga.

The Dutchman feels he should not be blamed for the troubles at Spurs, or the departure of Berbatov.

"I left a year ago and I was unhappy to leave," he said.

"It wasn't to be and I've moved on. Yes, they won the Carling Cup after I left, but that was my team and my players.

"Now the team is different."

He added: "I did well for a couple of seasons, the sun was always shining, it was a great atmosphere at the club and the players did well.

"The only person who was always complaining was Berbatov. They said to me he wants to leave because of you, but I don't think it was because of me. He proved me right and left anyway."
