Bent backs under-pressure Comolli

Tottenham striker Darren Bent

Tottenham striker Darren Bent has given his backing to the club's under-fire sporting director Damien Comolli.

Comolli is facing increased pressure after Tottenham's worst start to a season since 1912 which sees them at the foot of the Premier League.

But Bent said: "He's always around the place. He's a fantastic guy and one of the main reasons I came to Tottenham.

"There is no problem with him. He's been good; he is always helping the players - and that is what they need."

Although head coach Juande Ramos has also been in the spotlight, Comolli, who scouts and signs players for the Spaniard to work with, has found his position under close scrutiny.

Club chairman Daniel Levy will meet the Spurs Supporters Trust on Wednesday when Comolli's role will be one of the topics to be discussed.

Levy is also expected to explain the merits of the director of football system - with his club the only one in the Premier League to use the structure.

But Bent, who has scored three goals this season, is determined to help turn the season around and says Ramos has been keeping calm.

"Juande has been the same. He was the same when we won the Carling Cup last season and he is the same now," he said.

"He just tells us to stay positive, and we've got good enough players to get out of it. We believe that too.

"Tottenham fans seem to be everywhere. Wherever I go they seem to be coming out of the woodwork, asking what is going on. Sometimes it just happens - you can't put your finger on it.

"It's not like the lads are not trying or not giving 100%. We all are, but sometimes it just happens. The fans are behind us, and we know we can get out of it."

Bent also said he expects the club to recruit another striker in January.

"You don't have to be a genius to see we only have three strikers," he added.

"One's quite young, and another is injured - so you're going to be short. You always need an array of strikers. Whoever Ramos wants to bring in will make the competition better. It will make everyone sharper and want to play better."
