King eyes future England return

Ledley King tussles with Fulham's Clint Dempsey Tottenham captain Ledley King outlined his intentions to impress new England manager Fabio Capello after six months out through injuries.

The centre-back made his first appearance of the season in Spurs' 5-1 win over Fulham on Boxing Day.

"I am no different to any player - I want to impress the new (England) manager," said King.

"Once I have got a number of games under my belt then I can start to think about that (England recall)."

King was replaced after 73 minutes at White Hart Lane and will be assessed by medical staff ahead of Saturday's match against Reading.

"He's not 100% fit but we needed him to play because we didn't have enough defensive players," said Spurs manager Juande Ramos.

"It's been more than six months since my last game and it has been a frustrating time"

"It depends on how he comes out of this if he can play again during the week."

King had been out of action since undergoing knee surgery in the summer and a recent thigh strain delayed his comeback.

The 27-year-old also missed the beginning of last season after another knee operation and was subsequently sidelined for four months after sustaining a foot injury.

But King admitted he is relieved to be back in a Spurs shirt.

"It's been more than six months since my last game and it has been a frustrating time," he said.

"I've done a fair bit of training and have been chomping at the bit to get out there.

"The Christmas period is hectic. It is tough to come back at a period like this when I have been out for so long, so there is no problem with the knee."

Tottenham have had serious injury problems in defence during the current campaign and have recently had to make do without Ricardo Rocha, Michael Dawson, Gareth Bale, Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Anthony Gardner.

"It was important for us and the supporters to look at Ledley on the pitch," added Tottenham assistant manager Gus Poyet.

"We had enough luck to score four and give him a rest. Everything he did was outstanding."
