Van der Gun sights derby success

Cedric Van der Gun

Swansea City wing Cedric Van der Gun is eager to add next Saturday's south Wales clash with arch-rivals Cardiff City to his list of derby matches.

"In Holland... I've played in Ajax-Feyenoord which of course is a big match," said the Dutch winger.

"I've played Borussia Dortmund-Bayern Munich as well and that was a really nice match to play as well.

"But everybody in Swansea says it is nothing to Swansea-Cardiff, so we'll see next week!"

Swansea warmed up for Cardiff's visit to the Liberty Stadium next weekend with an impressive 2-0 victory at Scunthorpe on Saturday, a win that moved them up to 11th in the Championship table.

Van der Gun has had to bide his time since joining Swansea last September on an initial one-year deal, with the option of a further year.

A thigh problem suffered before his arrival at the Liberty meant he had been out of action for four months before making his Swansea debut in the 12 September loss at Preston.

Van der Gun marked his sixth game for Paulo Sousa's side on Saturday with a first goal for his new club.

"Finally! And of course the win which is really important to get the three points, it's nice to get a goal then," said the 30-year-old.

"Especially if you're a winger it's nice to play in a team who can play really good football like this.

"It was really important for me as well when I came to Swansea and I already knew they had a good team and they played some good football last year.

"I think this season we showed we can play some good football."

Cardiff and Swansea met three times last season, twice in the Championship and once in the Carling Cup.

Swansea won the Cup game, with both league games ending as 2-2 draws - although all three fixtures were marred by crowd trouble.

But Van der Gun is just looking forward to testing himself on the pitch in another high-stakes derby.

Cardiff are riding higher in the table than Swansea and could even top the Championship by beating Nottingham Forest on Sunday evening.

That could add even more spice to next Saturday's encounter if Cardiff arrive next Saturday perched on the peak - and there to be knocked off it.

"Everybody told me about it, especially a lot of fans came up to me and said, 'you know this game is really important?' Van der Gun added.

"So yeah I'm looking forward to it."
