Martinez hits out over Bodde deal

Ferrie Bodde

Swansea City manager Roberto Martinez has hit out at Derby County over their attempts to sign Dutchman Ferrie Bodde.

The Rams are understood to have come close to the Swans' £2m valuation for the 26-year-old want-away midfielder.

But Martinez is angry at suggestions that a fee has already been agreed for the man they signed a year ago from ADO Den Haag for £80,000.

"There has been too much talking from their party," he said. "Nothing has been agreed between the two parties."

Meanwhile, Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins says he is in no rush to make a decision on Derby's latest offer for Bodde.

He said: "Derby have made an improved offer, but nothing has really changed from our point of view.

"As far as Derby are concerned, I've told them I will come back to them and I haven't given them a timescale."

Bodde has been one of the Swans' star performers as they won promotion to the Championship.

The club have previously turned down offers of £500,000 and £750,000 from the relegated Premier League side this summer and will not let Bodde go easily.

"We are in no rush," said Jenkins. "We are relaxed and we want Roberto and Ferrie to talk through football issues.

606: DEBATE
Can Swansea hold on to Ferrie Bodde?

"For us it's a question of whether manager Roberto Martinez and Ferrie feel he can play for us and be happy next season.

"The fact is we don't want the player to go anywhere. Whatever anyone else bids for one of our players, we don't have to sell.

"And at present we are still pursuing every angle to try to make sure Ferrie stays with us. It's our job to keep our best players.

"We are in a comfortable position where we don't have to sell players and we haven't been touting anyone around."

It is understood that Den Haag would be entitled to half of any fee as part of a sell-on clause.

Should Swansea get their asking price, it would shatter the previous £1m record fee they received for Lee Trundle from Bristol City last summer.

Swansea have already lost midfielder Andy Robinson to Leeds since winning the League One title.

Derby's interest had appeared to have cooled after their second bid was turned down, but Derby boss Paul Jewell told BBC Sport earlier this week: "The door isn't shut - we'd love to sign Bodde.

"Swansea obviously want to keep their best players, but we were disappointed when they made our initial offer public.

"It's been going backwards and forwards and there's a lot of work to do yet.

"We watched Bodde all last season and he was Swansea's best player by a distance."

  • Swansea have announced a pre-season friendly against Barcelona B at the Minniestadi Stadium, next to the Nou Camp on Monday, 28 July. Time TBC.
