We need fans' backing - Bardsley

Sunderland defender Phil Bardsley

Sunderland defender Phil Bardsley has called for supporters to get behind the club and help them to break out of their poor slump in form.

The Black Cats were booed off after suffering a miserable 4-1 defeat at home to Bolton at the weekend.

"It's not nice when fans boo but that's part of football," the 23-year-old Bardsley told BBC Radio Newcastle.

"When times are hard you look for everybody to get behind you, including the fans."

The loss to Bolton was Sunderland's fourth consecutive defeat at home and saw them drop into the Premier League relegation zone.

But Bardsley believes with the help of their supporters they can quickly climb up the table with a few good results.

"The trophies they have won goes to show what a tough job we have got"

"It's not an absolute disaster," he added.

"We've been on a bit of a sticky run but we're only five points from ninth place and that just goes to show how tight it is. I'm sure our luck will turn soon and we'll start to win games.

"We've had a difficult couple of weeks and a couple of home defeats which we should have got something out of.

"We have just got to bounce back as quickly as possible."

Sunderland's task does not get any easier this weekend when they travel to Old Trafford to face Manchester United.

But Bardsley, who moved from Old Trafford to Sunderland for £2m in January, said: "That might be the game we need.

"Everyone is up for the challenge. I'm sure it's one we will relish.

"The trophies they have won goes to show what a tough job we have got.

"Old Trafford is a great place to go and play football and they are a great side. But we are going to have to go and stand up and be counted, fight for every ball and hopefully try and get a point or three."
