Hartley is made a Saint

The 23-year-old makes the journey from Edinburgh to Perth, a reversal of the road travelled by John O'Neil who recently joined Hibs.

Hartley is a direct replacement for O'Neil and the player is looking forward to joining up again with manager Sandy Clark who he played under at Hamilton.

Despite his youth, Hartley has already also played for Raith Rovers and Millwall.

"When I heard of St Johnstone's interest, I was very keen to come to McDiarmid Park as I had worked under Sandy Clark at Hamilton," said Hartley.

"The type of football which the manager wishes to play will suit me perfectly and I am looking forward to the season ahead with St Johnstone."

Clark said: "Paul has been a player whom I have admired since our days together at Hamilton Accies and, with the departure of John O'Neil, I was actively seeking a wide right player.

"Paul fits the bill perfectly and with the signing of Tommy Lovenkrands from AB Copenhagen, this gives me two pacy wingers either side of the pitch.

"This should provide our strikers with a good service and, hopefully, result in good entertainment for the fans."
