Murty completes Southampton move

Graeme Murty

Southampton have signed former Reading captain Graeme Murty after he impressed during a pre-season trial.

The 34-year-old played under Saints boss Alan Pardew at his former club.

Teesside-born Murty played 339 times for the Royals over an 11-year period, captaining them to promotion to the Premier League in 2006.

The former Scotland international right-back said: "I'm delighted to have tied up a move to Southampton and cannot wait to get started."

The start of the League One season is three days away, and Saints manager Pardew has moved swiftly to strengthen his defensive options.

"I've worked with the manager before and have a great respect for him. I know what he's about "

Murty is delighted at the move and hopes to play a big part in a successful season on the south coast.

"It is a challenge that lies ahead of us this season, but the right infrastructure is in place for the club to regain its Championship status and then move forward from there," he said.

"I've worked with the manager before and have a great respect for him. I know what he's about and I know exactly what he'll expect from me in the forthcoming campaign."

Murty has featured in three first-team pre-season matches including the 3-0 victory over Hearts at St Mary's.

Last season Murty spent two months on loan at Charlton.

Southampton kick off their League One campaign at home to Millwall on Saturday.
