Saints tie up Schneiderlin deal

Southampton have signed midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin from French club Strasbourg on a four-year contract.

The Under-19 France international, whose fee could rise to £1.2m, had been linked with Portsmouth but opted for St Marys to get more first-team football.

"This is a very good club and one where I know I'll get the chance to play," Schneiderlin told the club's website.

"There were other clubs interested in me but I know Southampton have a good record in bringing through youngsters."

Schneirderlin cited the example of Theo Walcott and his rise through the Southampton ranks before a switch to Arsenal.

He added: "Here you do not have to wait until a certain age in order to play. If you are good enough then you will play and that is important to me."

The midfielder follows Paul Wotton, who joined from Plymouth Argyle last week, in arriving at the club this summer.
