Blades sign Howard from Barnsley

Barnsley midfielder Brian Howard

Sheffield United have completed the signing of Barnsley's Brian Howard on loan with a view to a permanent deal.

The 25-year-old winger was left out of the Tykes squad to face Norwich last weekend, leading to speculation he was leaving the South Yorkshire club.

But the move has now gone ahead after protracted talks between the two clubs.

A Barnsley statement said the deal would be worth £500,000 in full when the transfer becomes permanent, with £200,000 to be paid up front.

The statement continued: "Other improved conditional payments have been agreed based on Sheffield United's original offer, including sell-on arrangements."

Howard joined Barnsley from Swindon in 2005 and helped the team win promotion at the end of his first season with the club, when they Swansea on penalties in the League One play-off final.

He came to national prominence last season when he scored a last-minute winner as Barnsley beat Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield in the FA Cup and led them to another astonishing victory over Chelsea in the following round.

Howard has only found the net once so far this season in a disappointing start by Barnsley, who have won only one of their opening eight games.
