Scunthorpe United could be tempted to recruit from the United States' MLS in the January transfer window.
Iron manager Nigel Adkins is tracking a central midfielder and has recently been to watch him whilst on his family holiday to Los Angeles.
Adkins told BBC Radio Humberside: "I've made some good contacts with LA Galaxy and I watched a player out there.
"When their season finishes in January there might be a possibility of bringing him to England."
Scunthorpe are preparing for life in League One following their relegation from the Championship after only one season in the second tier.
And Adkins is keen to add strength to a side that struggled for the majority of last season.
"We're probably going to run with a squad of about 20 players this season and we've more or less got that"He added: "We're opening up avenues that can help Scunthorpe United Football Club.
"He'll have a British passport - he's an American guy married to an English girl so it's something to explore."
The Iron have already signed winger Garry Thompson on a free transfer from League Two side Morecambe but Adkins has admitted they will not be making too many additions to the current squad.
"We're probably going to run with a squad of about 20 players this season and we've more or less got that as we stand at this time."
Meanwhile, Adkins admitted the club have cooled their interest in Mansfield's out-of-contract striker Michael Boulding, who has also been linked with former club Grimsby Town.
"We watched him four or five times last season but we've got four strikers at this moment in time in [Martin] Paterson, [Paul] Hayes, [Ben] May and [Jonathan] Forte and that's a good combination."
