Blue Square Premier side Salisbury City have been put up for sale for £1.
Chairman Neville Beal, who was part of a consortium that prevented City from going out of business in 2002, is to stand down after seven years in charge.
Beal admitted he was leaving his post with a "heavy heart" but said it was in the best interests of the club.
"It's the best way forward for the club. It needs somebody who can take it forward with a little more financial clout than me," he told BBC Wiltshire.
"When I first took over it was a Southern League Eastern Division side. It's grown into a Blue Square Premier side.
"It's a great little club with everything here, ready for somebody to come in. We want the right person to come in and take the club forward."
The club, who have been blighted by financial problems all season, have been helped by multi-millionaire businessman Peter Yeldon and in January appealed to fans to help raise funds to buy new players.
And while Beal admitted the new chairman would have to take on "some debt" without revealing the exact amount of money the club owes, he dismissed speculation suggesting Yeldon was lined up to step in.
"Peter came to help me out this season. He said right from the word go that it was just to help me out and get the club through the season," he said.
"The football club has been my life for a long, long time.
"First and foremost I'm supporter, and although I'm stepping down I'm certainly not going to walk away if we don't find a buyer. I'll do everything I can to make sure this club continues."
