Rangers chairman David Murray has paid tribute to Barry Ferguson after his club captain and Scotland international was given an MBE.
The 28-year-old, who helped Rangers to two league titles, was recognised in the Queen's Birthday Honours.
"Everyone associated with Rangers Football Club is very proud of Barry," said Murray.
"And I'm sure his family is very proud of the recognition he has had for his football and his charity work."
Ferguson is currently heavily involved in the Rangers Charity Foundation.
The midfielder joined Rangers in 1994 and, apart from a two-year spell with Blackburn Rovers, he has spent his career with the club he supported as a boy.
"He follows a list of Rangers greats that have had this honour bestowed upon them, people like John Greig, Ally McCoist and Walter Smith," said Murray.
"If he is as proud as I was when I received my award then he will be on top of the world""I'm sure Barry appreciates the award and will treasure it and I'm sure he will continue to assist the club in the years ahead."
Ferguson, who is also Scotland captain, was made Rangers' skipper in 2000 by then manager Dick Advocaat.
Under Alex McLeish, he captained Rangers to both the CIS Insurance Cup and Scottish Cup - scoring a goal in each final.
And the following season he led the team to the domestic treble with 18 goals in 48 appearances.
He was transferred to Blackburn Rovers for £7.5m in 2003, but a broken kneecap suffered at Newcastle on 28 December 2003 curtailed his first season in England.
Ferguson rejoined Rangers in January 2005 and helped the Glasgow club clinch the Scottish Premier League title and the CIS Insurance Cup that season.
He was reappointed captain last summer.
Former Rangers captain and manager John Greig, who was also given an MBE in 1977, added: "It's excellent news. I'm quite sure he is a proud man today.
"And if he is as proud as I was when I received my award then he will be on top of the world."
