Styles talk helped Pompey - Adams

Portsmouth boss Tony Adams believes a talk from referee Rob Styles has helped his players gain a better understanding of officials and the Respect campaign.

Officials and the Football Association's scheme have come under fire this week following some outspoken comments from high-profile managers.

But Adams said the visit of Styles had benefitted his players.

"It was really appreciated. My lads sat down and listened to him and gave him respect," he told BBC Radio Solent.

"I think you should respect everybody in life whether it's the referee, the supporter or anybody. I try to respect myself and respect others, to be honest.

"He [Styles] told us that referees have a difficult job and they're doing the best that they can"

"I'm not sure about the campaign. Whatever it's doing, it's doing, but they are the kind of values that I have in life."

A decision by Waterlooville-based Styles came under the spotlight in September when he awarded Manchester United a controversial penalty against Bolton at Old Trafford. He subsequently apologised to Bolton.

"He [Styles] told us that referees have a difficult job and they're doing the best that they can," added Adams.

"He told us the ways to go about things and how to your point across in a constructive manner, and maybe that certain behaviours are not acceptable and certain behaviours are."
