Pilgrims complete Walton signing

Simon Walton

Plymouth Argyle have completed the signing of Queens Park Rangers 20-year-old midfielder Simon Walton on a four-year deal.

The transfer fee is undisclosed but is understood to be a new record for the Home Park club.

"I've come here to play regular first-team football, which I wasn't doing at QPR," Walton said.

"I've had a rough 12-18 months of injuries, but I hope they're now behind me and I can settle in Plymouth."

He added: "My record at Home Park with other clubs is good. In four separate visits, I've ended up on the losing side only once, and that was last season."

Walton started his career with his hometown club Leeds United before going on to Charlton Athletic and QPR.

The club's record fee is £500,000, set in January when Scottish striker Steve MacLean joined from Cardiff City.

But Sturrock revealed that the transfer fee for the former Leeds midfielder could rise up to £750,000 with add-ons.

He added that he hopes to finalise the deal later this week.

While at the Valley, he was loaned out to Ipswich Town and Cardiff City before moving to QPR in a £200,000 deal last summer.

He made five appearances for QPR last season before being loaned to Hull City in January where he played 10 games.

Argyle have seen a host of players leave the club since the end of last season, including star Hungarian winger Peter Halmosi, who left for Hull City in a deal believed to be worth £2m.

Argyle's captain Paul Wotton was released at the end of last season, as was veteran midfielder Lilian Nalis. The club also cancelled the contract of goalkeeper Luke McCormick after he was charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

But Sturrock has found it hard to bring in replacements, only paying a fee for one player - Barnet winger Jason Puncheon - who cost £250,000.

"Why is it so hard to attract players to Argyle?"
Have your say

The only other experienced player to arrive has been former Colchester United captain Karl Duguid on a free transfer.

Sturrock says attracting players to a club in the far reaches is proving difficult.

"I envisaged it to be hard to bring in players, but not this hard and it's causing me a lot of frustrations," he said.
