Notts County legend Wheeler dies

Former Notts County trainer Jack Wheeler has died at the age of 89.

Wheeler, who also played in goal for Birmingham and Huddersfield, started working at Meadow Lane as a trainer in 1957 and stayed for 26 years.

He also had two spells as Magpies caretaker manager including a lengthy spell prior to the appointment of Jimmy Sirrel, who also died last year.

Wheeler had been in hospital for a few weeks and died in the QMC in Nottingham on Saturday morning.

The club recently re-named the Meadow Club 'Wheeler's Bar' in honour of a man who many feel is the club's greatest ever servant.

He was also president of the Notts Former Players' Association at the time of his death.

Wheeler was on the touchline for more than 1,200 consecutive Magpies matches.

A minute's applause was observed prior to Notts' home game against Exeter City on 10 January.
