Roeder sacked as Norwich manager

Glenn Roeder has been sacked as manager of Championship strugglers Norwich.

A statement on the Canaries' website said: "Norwich City today confirmed the contract of manager Glenn Roeder has been terminated with immediate effect."

Roeder, who resigned as Newcastle boss in May 2007, joined Norwich in October of the same year and led the club from the bottom of the table to safety.

Norwich are currently fourth from bottom and suffered a 1-0 FA Cup exit at the hands of Charlton on Tuesday.

Club chairman Roger Munby said: "We'd like to place on record our sincere gratitude and admiration for what Glenn and his staff achieved last season when they saved the club from relegation against the odds.

"However this season the position has become untenable and it is with regret that the board have decided to take this step."

First-team coaches Paul Stephenson and Adam Sadler have also left Carrow Road.

Munby said a decision had yet to be made over who would take charge of the team for Saturday's league game at home to Barnsley.

Roeder had insisted he would fight on after the third-round FA Cup replay defeat at home to Charlton, which was the Norfolk club's sixth loss in eight games.

There were protests after the match, with some fans calling for Roeder to resign.

Former QPR and Newcastle defender Roeder joined Norwich on a two-and-a-half-year contract, replacing Peter Grant.

Roeder had been out of a job since resigning as Newcastle manager after 15 months in charge at St James' Park.

West Ham appointed Roeder as their manager in June 2001 but he was sacked shortly into the new season in August 2003 as the Hammers eyed a quick return to the top flight following relegation the previous term.

Meanwhile, Norwich have recalled last season's top scorer Jamie Cureton from loan at Barnsley and he will be eligible to face the South Yorkshire club on Saturday.

Cureton, who joined the Tykes on a three-month deal in late November, scored two goals in eight appearances during his loan spell.
