Belief came from Kinnear - Given

Shay Given

Newcastle United goalkeeper Shay Given feels manager Joe Kinnear has restored the players' belief in their ability since taking charge of the club.

The Magpies have lost only one of their last five games following the Irishman's arrival on Tyneside and Given hailed his compatriot's impact.

"Joe's come in and given us belief that we can go out there and get results," Given told BBC Radio Newcastle.

"He says it how it is and I think the players respect him for that."

Monday's win was Given's 450th appearance in a Newcastle shirt, taking him to within 46 games of record holder Jimmy Lawrence, who kept goal for the Magpies between 1904-1922.

And the Republic of Ireland goalkeeper, who made his debut in a 2-1 win against Sheffield Wednesday in August 1997, admitted his pride at reaching the milestone.

"You don't know what's round the corner, whether managers want to keep you or sell you, but it's nice. I've been here 11-and-a-half years now so I'd like to make a few more appearances," he said.

"It's a great club and a fantastic place to play football and I'm delighted to have made so many appearances.

"After the last couple of years I've had with injuries I don't like to look too far ahead but you can't take anything for granted."

Given joined Newcastle United from Premier League rivals Blackburn Rovers for a fee of £1.5m in May 1997.
