Gers cool with Webster Well loan

Rangers defender Andy Webster

Rangers manager Walter Smith says he will allow Andy Webster to leave on loan but that Motherwell have yet to make an official approach.

Well manager Mark McGhee has confirmed that he is interested in the former Hearts and Wigan defender.

Smith said: "So, if there are clubs interested, they just need to get in touch with us.

"Motherwell are obviously , but no club has made any move to take him, other than speaking to his agent."

Webster's career has been blighted by a series of injuries since he left Hearts for Wigan in May 2007.

The 26-year-old, who has been capped 22 times for Scotland, managed just four games for The Latics before his loan switch to Rangers, which was made permanent in June when he signed a three-year deal.

"John Sutton we heard might want to come north again, so we have asked to be kept informed on that one. "

He was restricted to just one appearance for the Ibrox club last season and he was not included in the Rangers squad for the Scottish Premier League opener at Falkirk.

"He needs regular football," said Smith. "He's been out for two years now and there is no guarantee of a position here and that won't do him any good.

"So we will let him go out until January to see if he can get himself regular games - I feel we need to do that."

Smith was comfortable for Webster to join another club in the SPL should his agent and Motherwell come to an arrangement.

"If they can come to an agreement, and the player is happy to go there, then there is no reason why he shouldn't," said Smith. "We'd have no objection to it."

McGhee had earlier revealed that he is also tracking Wycombe Wanderers striker John Sutton.

"We have registered an interest in Webster from Rangers because we heard he might be available," said McGhee.

"And John Sutton we heard might want to come north again, so we have asked to be kept informed on that one. But that is as far as it has gone."

McGhee failed with an earlier loan bid for Celtic centre-half John Kennedy.

And the Fir Park club have been rebuffed after an approach for Livingston's Dave Mackay.

Sutton, who has had spells in Scotland with Raith Rovers, Dundee and St Mirren, moved to Wycombe last summer and scored six goals for the Wanderers last term.

Togo international midfielder Souleymane Mamam has been on trial with Motherwell for several weeks, but any move would depend on work permit issues.
