McGhee offers no cup exit excuses

Mark McGhee (left) and Scott Leitch Motherwell manager Mark McGhee offered no excuses for his side's exit from the Scottish Cup at the hands of Dundee.

"We were well beaten. I didn't recognise the team tonight, so that was disappointing," said McGhee.

"They were exactly as we expected. We didn't compete, we didn't pass the ball well, we didn't play."

"Losing two goals, it's difficult to come back. We didn't find our rhythm at 2-1, and we never looked like getting another goal."

Going into the match Motherwell's league form had been impressive.

Many of the Lanarkshire team's fans were hopeful of setting up a quarter-final tie with another First Division side, Queen of the South.

But McGhee's dream of a lengthy cup run ended with his side's poor display at Fir Park.

Paul McHale and Scott Robertson put Dundee two goals up, with Darren Smith scoring for 'Well half-an-hour from the end.

"We played more long balls than I've seen us play all season," said McGhee.

"We didn't get on the ball, our strikers didn't look sharp, and we didn't have the legs to get down the sides or get behind them.

"It was disappointing. We've been beaten by a better team tonight."
