Middlesbrough assistant manager Malcolm Crosby has defended England winger Stewart Downing following criticism in Saturday's 2-0 win against Andorra.
Downing, 24, has struggled to reproduce his impressive club form in an England shirt, but Crosby is hopeful the winger will be given another chance to shine.
"I don't think there's anybody better on the left wing in the Premier League," he told BBC Tees.
"I have sympathy for him and given time he will get regular England games."
Downing, who has 18 caps for England, was a key player for the Teessiders last season, scoring 10 goals in 45 appearances.
Meanwhile Crosby has reassured supporters that the future of winger Adam Johnson remains with Middlesbrough.
Johnson, 21, is reported to be disappointed at a lack of first-team opportunities, and has attracted the interest of teams such as Glasgow Rangers and Fulham.
And although the England Under-21 international enjoyed a fruitful spell with Championship side Watford last season, Crosby is adamant Johnson continues to feature in Gareth Southgate's plans.
"We want to do well in this league so I think it is important that we have him with us," he said.
"I understand his frustration, he's a great lad, he's a good trainer and loves his football, but I think my reasons are the most important at the moment.
"It's difficult for him, but we need a healthy squad."
