Ferguson has defensive concerns

Sir Alex Ferguson's side face Chelsea on Sunday When: Sunday 5 August
Kick-off: 1500 BST, Wembley
Listen: 1500 BST, Radio Five Live/online
Highlights: Match of the Day, 2220 BST, BBC ONE

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson wants to address his side's defensive problems before Sunday's Community Shield game against Chelsea.

United conceded three first-half goals in a 3-2 defeat by Inter Milan in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday.

A crowd of 73,738 saw a sloppy performance by a strong United defence at Old Trafford.

Ferguson said: "We were all over the place at times. If you defend like that, you will lose."

Wayne Rooney put United in front but a combination of an inspired 35-year-old Luis Figo and some poor defending led to Inter hitting back three times late in the opening period.

Adriano's own goal gave the Red Devils hope but they could not stave off a defeat that left Ferguson in no doubt where his side need to improve.

"The defending in the first-half was very poor," he added.

"You will not win any games, no matter who you are playing against, if you defend like that. We were so open in the first half."

Ferguson was much happier with United's attacking display, with Rooney in particular catching the eye.

"There was some really good one-touch play at times, which I was delighted with," stated Ferguson.

"Even a side with the experience of Inter couldn't do anything about it, which is something I am very happy about."

Ahead of the Community Shield game at Wembley, Ferguson's side face Doncaster and Peterborough in friendlies on Friday and Saturday respectively.

"Owen Hargreaves and Anderson will be involved, as will Darren Fletcher and Mikael Silvestre," he revealed.

"The main thing is I was able to keep 11 players on the pitch for 90 minutes against Inter, so, although there might be one or two changes for Sunday, I know exactly where they are now in terms of fitness."

Summer signings Hargreaves and Anderson are unlikely to feature on Sunday but should be ready for the start of their Premiership campaign at home to Reading on 12 August.
