Rooney and Scholes may face bans

Manchester United's Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes Manchester United pair Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes could be banned for the start of the Premiership season after being sent off in a friendly.

Rooney was dismissed for allegedly elbowing Pepe in the 3-1 win over Porto in Amsterdam on Friday while Scholes was sent off for two bookable offences.

It is not normal practice to report red cards in these tournaments to the relevant Football Association.

But it appears referee Ruud Bossen has submitted a report to the Dutch FA.

That would trigger an automatic letter to the English FA which would be duty bound to give both players a violent conduct charge. If proved, that charge carries carried a three-match suspension.

However, it is also possible that Rooney and Scholes might miss the rest of the Amsterdam tournament, which would get rid of part of any ban before the English season begins.

Plus, United are expected to launch an appeal against both red cards.

More should become clear on Monday when the FA receives the report from their counterparts in the Netherlands.

United kick off their season by hosting Fulham on Sunday 20 August.
