Pearce tips Charlton to beat drop

Stuart Pearce Manchester City manager Stuart Pearce believes Charlton will escape relegation after his side were held to a goalless draw by the Addicks.

The point helped Alan Pardew's men climb out of the bottom three for the first time since September.

"I said some months ago I didn't think they would be one of the teams that get relegated," said Pearce.

"To stay in this league you cannot ship goals. Just lately, Charlton have not conceded many."

"Our destiny is in our own hands because we still have Sheffield United to play at home"

Pearce added: "They also have Darren Bent up front. My centre-halves handled him well but we all know if you switch off for a minute he will score.

"As long as their defence keep things tight, there is every chance he will get them a goal."

Charlton have picked up three wins and two draws from their last five games and manager Pardew is confident his team can avoid the drop.

"The momentum is with us now," he said, with his side level on points with Sheffield United but ahead of the third-from-bottom side on goals scored.

The Blades could move above Charlton on Saturday - if they earn at least a draw against Newcastle.

However, Pardew stated: "A few teams around us will be starting to feel a bit nervous now.

"Our destiny is in our own hands because we still have Sheffield United to play at home. I don't think we could have asked for any more than that two months ago."

Charlton play Reading at home on Easter Monday and then visit Everton on 15 April.
