Pearce calls for more investment

"Over the last two or three years, we have not speculated as well as we should have done financially," he said.

"It is probably catching up with us a little bit. It gives us a reminder going into the summer."

City, 17th in the Premiership table, signed Michael Ball on a short-term deal in January and Emile Mpenza after a period on trial in mid-February.

Mpenza joined as a free agent, having ended his contract with Qatar side Al Rayyan, while Ball joined City from PSV Eindhoven.

Pearce's side remain in the FA Cup but have lost their last four Premiership games and are now six points above third-from-bottom Charlton, although City do have two games in hand.

Chairman John Wardle is understood to have held talks with potential investors that - providing City stay in the Premiership - will lead to increased transfer finds this summer.
