Former Liverpool full-back Alan Kennedy has said that the signing of Glen Johnson can only improve the Reds' chances of winning the Premier League.
Johnson, 24, completed his £17.5m move to Anfield from Portsmouth on Friday.
"Glen Johnson is a quality player and a proven international," Kennedy told BBC Radio Merseyside.
"He has for me looked the best right back for a little while and I think he'll improve Liverpool's chances of winning the Premier League."
Kennedy, who won five league titles with the Reds, continued: "I think everybody is pleased about it - but it means competition for places.
"You look at the right-backs and the left-backs - we've got competition for places.
"Glen Johnson will have to work hard at his game. Alvaro Arbeloa has been doing particularly well, particularly at the later stages of last season, and he knows now Glen Johnson will be Rafa's number one.
"That improves the team, improves the squad and of course it improves Liverpool's chances of winning the Premier League."
