We never doubted Keane, says Lee

Liverpool assistant boss Sammy Lee praised the contribution of Robbie Keane after the striker scored twice in the 3-0 win over Bolton.

Keane struggled following his big-money move in the summer but has now scored three goals in the last two games.

"I do not feel he has ever lacked confidence here, he has kept going and done well," said Lee.

"We have had no doubts in Robbie's ability or his work-rate, and what he adds to this club is immense."

Keane was an unused substitute as Liverpool drew at home with Hull on 13 December - prompting questions over the Republic of Ireland international's future.

But Lee added: "We know the quality of the boy, we know what he is capable of and what he is doing for us and what he adds to the club. There is no problem with him here.

"We don't feel that Robbie has been out of form, despite what people keep saying.

"He has been working hard, tirelessly for the team, and that is the measure of the lad that he has kept on going.

"People have said things about him, but we know why we brought him to the club."

Keane has now scored seven goals in all competitions in 25 appearances for Liverpool.

The result at Anfield means that Liverpool reclaim the lead in the Premier League that they had briefly lost earlier on Boxing Day after Chelsea defeated West Brom.

"That was a very disappointing result"
Bolton boss Gary Megson

Liverpool have not won the top-flight title since 1990, but Lee was adamant that his team should be comfortable with their position at the top of the table.

"It's very important to be top," said Lee. "I don't mean to sound conceited but that's what we prepare for.

"The patience in our play, the quality in our play was paramount."

Bolton had won three of their last four games away from home but manager Gary Megson admitted his side had lost to the better team.

"That was a very disappointing result," said the Trotters manager.

"There is a chasm now appearing - there always was a gap - between the top three or four and everyone else in the Premiership.

"I was concerned by the manner of the goals we conceded.

"One came straight from one of our own corners - it went from their keeper to the back of our net in about six seconds. To concede a goal like that is not acceptable at this level."

Megson started the match with his team playing a 4-5-1 system, packing the midfield and trying to stifle Liverpool.

But with his team trailing at half-time he brought on Kevin Davies and switched to a 4-4-2 formation.

"We set up to flood midfield with players, but changed that system when it clearly wasn't working," added Megson.

"We had set out to keep things tight early on, and hoped to catch them on the break, but we only troubled them in the opening few minutes.

"We did not want to play 4-4-2 at Anfield, because Liverpool go through you like a knife through butter when you do that.

"And that is what happened a few times in the second half when we did try to push more men forward."
