Benitez questions Spain on Torres

Fernando Torres

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has questioned the Spain training regime after striker Fernando Torres went down with another hamstring problem.

Torres suffered his fifth hamstring injury in 16 months on Wednesday and Benitez wonders whether the way he trains with the Spain is the cause.

"He has been injured now three times while with the national team and it is something we have to analyse," he said.

"We knew they were doing something that is maybe not the best for the player."

Torres will be out of action for two to three weeks after sustaining a hamstring strain in Wednesday's 1-0 Champions League win against Marseille.

The Spaniard completed 90 minutes but a scan revealed he needs another spell on the sidelines, having just returned from five weeks out with a similar problem.

Benitez claims Torres had no history of hamstring injuries while at previous club Atletico Madrid, and says they will now work on a specific plan to ease the striker back to fitness.

Liverpool will also talk to the Spanish management team in an attempt to resolve any issues surrounding the training he does while on national duty.

Torres last played for Spain - and scored - in the 3-0 win over Chile on 19 November.

"We are very disappointed with the situation. We have to analyse why it has happened," said Benitez.

"We have been working with prevention exercises in the past, and still we have the same problem.

"We were taking time with him, he wasn't being rushed back. The time and training was all under control, as were all the exercises.

"We now have to analyse why it has happened again. The doctor and the physio were both working very hard with Fernando and they are both first-class, but now it is the same situation.

"We will now not be taking any risks with his comeback. If he is fit then he will play, if he is not fit then he won't, it is simple."

Meanwhile, defender Fabio Aurelio will also be out for a fortnight with a calf injury.

The victory over Marseille at Anfield earned Rafa Benitez's side a place in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Steven Gerrard scored the winner against Group D rivals Marseille, heading in at the far post from Xabi Alonso's cross on 23 minutes.
