Liverpool conceded twice in 13 first-half minutes as they suffered a pre-season friendly defeat to Swiss side Grasshopper in Zurich.
Vero Salatic opened the scoring with a header, before new signing Gabriel Paletta made a mess of a back-pass to let David Blumer steal in to score.
Substitute Steven Gerrard volleyed just wide and later missed from 10 yards, while Peter Crouch had a shot saved.
Mark Gonzalez and Craig Bellamy went close in the first half for the Reds.
The was Gerrard's first outing since he missed a penalty for England during their World Cup defeat to Portugal in Gelsenkirchen.
The Liverpool skipper played for the final 30 minutes - and was quickly involved in the action.
He shot wide from range and set up a chance that Crouch, himself a second-half substitute and making his first appearance since the World Cup, put in the net only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.
Liverpool went into the game without Fabio Aurelio, Robbie Fowler, Luis Garcia and Steve Finnan - all of whom are carrying injuries.
But Jamie Carragher and Jan Kromkamp also made their first appearances of the pre-season.
And afterwards manager Rafael Benitez said: "It was a typical pre-season game and we created seven or eight good chances but couldn't score.
"But the main positive for me was the return of Gerrard, Carragher, Crouch and Kromkamp."
